It's all about mark(eting)

Here at the conference, the most important presentation for a marketing manager was the one Mark Corum did.

Mark Corum Plone Conf 2011

He has been around in the community for years and has a lot of experience in marketing. He is not only involved in Plone, he worked for political organisations as well. His message? Be honest and let people know what you are doing.

Mark Corum talked about social media, about the new site that will be launched and he answered some questions from people in the audience. According to Mark, Plone companies should focus on telling stories; let people know what you do and why you do it. Don't focus on selling stuff. If you introduce yourself by asking if the other person wants to buy your product, you are about to fail.

Mark also talked about a new site, plone.com. This platform will be a marketing tool instead of a place where developers show new features. The domain has been registered and in the next months people involved in marketing will provide the content. Everybody is welcome to contribute.

The most noticable things he said are listed below:

  • include news and a blog on your website. People think your company is dead when nothing happens.
  • marketing is no science; dare to innovate and try new ways.
  • use social media, but be careful what and how you say things.
