2015

Together with Rijkswaterstaat, we created this mobile-first application that provides up-to-date information regarding traffic disruption. Not knowing what hinder might come your way while driving on the Dutch freeway was a problem in the past. Now, this app directs you to the fastest route possible, making sure you arrive at your destination on time.

Hindrance

The Dutch don’t know any better: you are driving on the freeway and your exit seems to be closed due to road work. By offering drivers the knowledge before they hit the road will decrease these frustrations. The application features a detailed map in which you can enter your location and destination. The app doesn’t only show you the traffic and possible hinders, it also shows you all things planned that might delay you in the future. It pays off to check your route every once in a while and decreases the risk of arriving late.

Widget

Besides the general application, Four Digits also created a widget which has been placed on various governmental websites. See this link.

Results

The project was divided into several topics. All of these topics (filters and button) were designed and created to be reusable throughout the application, increasing manageability from a developers standpoint.

Frontend beast

The application was designed to gather information from multiple APIs coming from different databases.

Version 2.0

In 2020, the demand for a new and up-to-date design for the application made Four Digits look for the newest standard in accessibility and user friendliness. In all, the newly designed existing features in combination with new features, such as news, traffic jam expectancy and live video image, resulted in a great and useful piece of software for public usage.

Used techniques

The frontend was fully built in React and connected to various APIs. In addition, we used Wagtail as a headless CMS in Django so that the team at Rijkswaterstaat can easily add news, content pages and peak forecasts. This content is available as an API for the frontend.

Collaboration

On this scale, working with a governmental organ takes a lot of meetings, documentation, planning and, above all, tuning. Our experience in these types of projects helped us greatly. Together with Rijkswaterstaat, we came up with the most efficient and structured approach by which the project was completed.
